I can agree with that, to a

I can agree with that, to a degree. The point I was making earlier was that plot developments are relative to a setting's scale. Stories set on a vast canvas may involve world-altering events. For my taste, campaigns like that make it difficult to suspend my disbelief. I don't particularly enjoy gods or teleological timelines. I tend to enjoy a more chaotic, open-ended world in which characters are merely players, not masters.

Maybe that is one reason why I like the post-apocalyptic setting: It captures for me the view that even the greatest of destructive powers cannot stamp out life completely, that there are always unanticipated and unintended consequences, and that life is often surprisingly innovative. Patterns are escaped, not fulfilled. It was the old orders that brought the world's downfall, not the new diversities that seek to rise.
