They tend to be pretty slow-paced, since you might have to wait a day or two between people replying, but it's a great option for people who don't have a face-to-face gaming group.
Steel Rat
I agree with Steel Rat, if don't mind the slow pace that it is a good alternative to face-to-face or real time online gaming.
As a DM/GM it gives me the opportunity really roleplay the npcs and play up the battles by adding a lot of flavor text and such, that you sometimes just don't get a chance to when running a live game.
Or if you're not very good at doing funny voices. You also don't gain weight from all the pizzas
Steel Rat
Man I hate doing different voices in my live game. Not to mention soda, chips, bad Chines food, Subway sandwiches, and sitting in a chair for several hours.
As I do the reading program for work where I HAVE to read novels aloud I have come to not mind the silly voices as much as before. I embarrass myself more everyday at work now than in a gaming group
Fobbo, you couldn't do a different voice to save your .... dice. LOL.

And you sit for several hours and eat badly every time you travel.
